IOTA Kenya - Piling Works

Piling Works

Foundation engineering for demanding ground conditions across Kenya

Overview

We understand how critical foundations are to any type of construction, whether it is commercial or residential buildings, or bridges. Thus, we have specialised in design and construction of piling foundations, which is one of our competitive advantages. With a team of highly skilled engineers, equipment and technology we have the capacity to offer design, installation and testing of piles for all your foundation needs.

IOTA has accumulated experience in the construction of piled foundation works in industrial, commercial and residential buildings, bridges, roads using both large diameter piles and micro piles. We deliver customised solutions for specific designs to meet clients’ unique construction requirements.

What we do in piling works:

We have in-house expertise, equipment and skills needed to design, implement and provide piled foundation solutions. IOTA takes prides in ownership of all piling equipment including but not limited to piling rigs, sheet pile driver, excavators, tipper trucks and mobile self loading concrete mixers. These equipment play an important role of ensuring that piling work is conducted seamlessly with keen adherence to the integrity of the works and work program.

Our personnel comprising of technical and operational teams of engineers, quantity surveyors, technicians and operators have hands on experience in dealing with different nature of piled foundation works. We pride ourselves in the ability to provide customized solutions in relation to different projects unique needs. We are also flexible to expanding in both our equipment and personnel depending on the needs of the project.

IOTA prides in having the experience to carry out testing for different types of piles. We have both the personnel and the equipment for these works. Some of the equipment include pile driving analyzer (PDA) testing kit to carry out high strain pile testing, pile integrity testing kit for testing the integrity of piles and static load testing equipment for testing the capacity of the pile.

(a) Pile driving analyzer(PDA) test

This is a high strain dynamic load test that helps to determine the pile capacity. This test is essential in accessing the bearing capacity of a pile, evaluating shaft integrity This is a fast method of determining the pile capacity as it can be used to test several piles in a day.

The process involves releasing a hammer at different heights to drop on the top of the test pile and recording a number of parameters used to determine the pile impedance.

(b) Static load testing

This is a test that measures the response of a pile under an applied load. It aids in determining the bearing capacity of a pile.

In this testing, the test pile is subjected to incremental vertical loads using a hydraulic jack reacting against the anchor/reaction piles. Load is applied in stages, held for specified durations, and pile settlement is measured using dial gauges mounted on reference beams place around the pile on the ground. Loading continues until the maximum test load is reached, after which the pile is unloaded in stages and settlement readings are recorded.

(c) Integrity pile testing

This is a low strain, non- destructive method of determining the integrity of a pile. It helps in determining the potential shaft defects like major cracks, necking, inclusions and voids. It also aids in detecting the effective length of constructed piles.
